With Brexit, the Scottish referendum, and the threat to the Irish Peace Agreement if the open borders arrangement ends, England risks returning to its origins as a single-country state, which it was for 500 years from 1066 until 1603.
By quitting Europe, Britain risks losing Scotland, Ulster and maybe even Wales, and returning to the kingdom of England, the state it was from 1066 to 1603. It was a time of Great Men, and Glorious Battles, and Significant Dates like that of 1415, Agincourt, where the English army led by Henry V destroyed the French knights
The truth is that the English king ordered the mass murder of valuable French prisoners who had given their parole, lost his crown and treasure chest to crafty French peasants, and left his army unpaid to starve to death in Calais while he fled home bankrupt and humiliated, he did nothing for the next three years.
But the Myth of England is much more than this. From 1066 to 1603, England's history has been corrupted for political purposes by tax-collectors, foreign invaders and religious maniacs. England was a rich and pleasant land only when it was closely tied by trade to Europe, and at no time worse off than when its leaders went to war with its neighbors, except when these came to conquer and oppress its citizens, and could do so because the economy was weak.
